Technological developments have the potential to either deepen our rapid consumption of the earth's resources and generate new sources of contamination, or, if properly designed, significantly contribute to resource use efficiency and pollution prevention. Technology is not the answer, but it can be an important part of the solution.

Sustainable technologies are those which result in meaningful employment opportunities, reduce resource consumption through efficiency improvements, help to strengthen community, and reduce or eliminate the production of persistent toxic substances. Technologies that help us reduce our consumption of energy, water and materials in areas such as shelter and transportation will be key to making progress toward urban sustainability.

Overcoming barriers to the development and diffusion of sustainable technologies is an important aspect of this root cause. Many promising technologies have already been developed but lack sufficient drivers to bring them fully into the marketplace. Thus, this section of the Agenda will profile sustainable technologies and look at how barriers to their development and diffusion are being overcome.
